The journey

The ferry ports in the UK that take you closest to the house are Portsmouth, Poole and Weymouth.

Brittany Ferries sail conventional cross channel ships from Portsmouth to Cherbourg (5hrs) St Malo (9hrs) and Caen (6hrs). LD Lines sail from Portsmouth to Le Havre (around 6hrs) now that P&O have given up the route. The 9 hour St Malo journey is best used as an overnight trip.

Condor Ferries operate a fastcraft from Poole to St Malo via Jersey (6hrs). In March 2005 Brittany Ferries started high-speed ferry services from Portsmouth to Cherbourg (3hrs) and to Caen (3hrs 45mins). Brittany Ferries also operate Poole to Cherbourg (2hrs 15mins).

Once you arrive in France the drive from Cherbourg to the house takes around 2.25hrs, Caen 1hr 20mins, Le Havre around 2hrs and St Malo around 2hrs

Transmanche Ferries sail from Newhaven to Dieppe (4hrs). Dieppe is around 3.5hrs drive to the house

It is possible to use EuroTunnel to Calais (30mins), the Dover Calais cross channel ferries (1hr 15mins) or Speedferries Dover to Boulogne (50 mins) but it will take 4.5 hours to drive to the house. This longer drive can be considerably cheaper even when you take into consideration the tolls and petrol.

The house is approx 5 hours drive from Paris, you can also travel to Paris by train from Vire (our nearest large town).

The nearest airports are Dinard and Caen

All these road times are very approx, depending on how you drive and are intended as a guide only. The boat timings and destinations are based on 2005 and again, are intended as a guide.

These are the three main ports. The drive from the northern ports (Calais etc) is around 4-5 hours.
